Fear Is Like A Forest

Site Specific

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The artwork deals with themes of anxiety and isolation and was born out of a desire to connect with others by telling my own story. The intention was to create a visually impactful, surprising installation, in juxtaposition to its surroundings, inviting the public to stop and look more closely, and to open a conversation about the themes explored in the artwork.

How was the illustration used:
A site-specific art installation combining hand drawn illustration and 3-D design. Visually, the concept brought a forest scene to an urban environment, displayed in a shop window in Hackney, London. The show was proudly inclusive, intentionally eschewing traditional methods of experiencing art. Instead, the project brought art to everyday life on the high street.

How did you make this work:
I began initial sketches during Mental Health Awareness Week and 1 year on I had a final artwork. This involved months of research, visiting forests in the UK and Sweden, taking sketches from life. I produced dozens of handmade textures using lino printing techniques. These illustrations were then assembled in PS and printed as panels to fit the space. I used crowdfunding to fund the project.
