Jimin Park
Where are the sounds?

Children's Publishing

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
I made a picture book based on my father’s experience. This is a creative challenge for my final project in MA illustration course. He is deaf and recognising with lip-reading without sign language. Using this as a motif, I’m talking about deafness which is recognizing sounds through different senses, but also I tried to deal with the process of finding the inner voice that lies within us.

How was the illustration used:
Children publishing, A book cover, Experimental, Exploration

How did you make this work:
For this story, I researched a culture of deafness and how they perceive and express sounds. Also, I studied and practiced to express abstract shapes of sounds. And then I used pencil, stencils and mixed media, collage with monoprint paper which I created the patterns. At the colour stage, I used monotone until the protagonist realized the sound, and then I added colour.
