Wangari Maathai Plants a Forest

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I was commissioned to create 15 illustrations for the interior and the cover of an upcoming Chapter book part of the Rebel Girls series about the life of Dr. Wangari Maathai.

How was the illustration used:
The Illustrations accompanied text across 10 chapters, in full spreads, single pages, or half spreads. My main focus was to try to convey the feeling of her life and context through textures, both in the natural and the material world. Textures as a way to tell her story, as flavor to accentuate the particular, her roots in rural Kenya and the heritage that is so present in their modern culture.

How did you make this work:
The work was done digitally. It involved the creation of several textures and experimenting with several different brushes to arrive at the desired tapestry of textures.
