ProfessionalWhy did you make this work:
I was commissioned to create a modern interpretation of the traditional Willow Pattern, out of urban Hong Kong elements, to be used on a local ceramic product range. My design features boats, trees, temples and a pair of birds, and reflects the HK atmosphere of old and new.
How was the illustration used: My original HK Willow Pattern Collection was in blue and white, but this green and gold version, printed onto bone-china tableware, was made as a special limited edition for Lane Crawford department store in Hong Kong as a product to celebrate Chinese New Year.
How did you make this work: I researched the locations to include in the design, making correlations with the traditional Willow Pattern elements. I drew the illustration with a fine pen and scanned it into Photoshop. I created separate layers for the different tones of colour/gold to provide production files for printing. I then adjusted the shape of the design to fit onto each separate product, compensating for 3D shapes.

Biography:
Mariko is an illustrator and printmaker. She studied at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, where she also went on to be an Associate Lecturer. Mariko’s commercial clients include Tiffany & Co., VOGUE, and the Mandarin Oriental hotel group, and she created the permanent interior artwork for an entire subway station in Hong Kong. Her speciality subjects are travel and food.
Mariko is currently based in Tokyo, and splits her time between California, Asia and London.
