My project is based on the experiences of Ghana me and my family share, past and present. This will focus on the different time periods in which my Dad grew up in Ghana, my Mum worked in Ghana and my own more recent experiences. There are multiple themes that this work explores such as cultural identity, family, nostalgia and diaspora.
How was the illustration used: This body of work is designed to be used as part of an exhibition and a form of illustrated journal. The work aims to introduce people to Ghanaian culture and pose questions around the factors that create our sense of identity and how that can change over time.
How did you make this work: I use a variety of different mediums within my work and to try and capture the different narratives that run through my work. This ranges from graphite and collage on tinted paper to capture the fading memories from my Fathers childhood; to the use of oil paints and photo transfers to create portraits of my family from reference photos from my most recent trip back to Ghana.

Biography:
Joshua Donkor is a third year Illustration student studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University. His work explores themes of cultural and racial identity based on his mixed background with his Father being born in Ghana and his Mother in England. In his portraiture he en devours to create fully formed characters full of depth in order to accurately portray his figures and their cultural identities. His choice of colour palette is often influenced by stills from the film "Moonlight", which drew great acclaim for its revolutionary use of lighting to capture dark skin tones.
