Why did you make this work:
This was an open brief in my third year called 'extended study'. After visiting Berlin back in September 2018 and staying in Prenzlauer Berg an area originally home to artists and squatters, which has now become an expensive place to live. The process of gentrification was delayed in this part of Berlin as the city was hugely affected by war and the building and destroying of the Berlin Wall.

How was the illustration used:
I decided to make an animation highlighting the issue of gentrification, to create awareness on the subject. This is relevant in cities all over the world, including where I live in Bristol. Touching on thought provoking stories using animation is an amazing way to create a message, as it grips the viewer in an original and emotive way.

How did you make this work:
I created this work using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and my Wacom tablet. I used simple but affective techniques such as linear drawing and splashes of colour to highlight the messages. I used reportage approach to show the before and after and a sense of community within the animation.

Biography:
Laurel Molly is a Bristol-based "Creative Conscience" award-winning artist who makes art with compassion. Her work is emotive always respectful, an international collaboration between the artist and her subjects. She draws faces and places with integrity, always prioritising the ethics and message of her work over the aesthetics. She tells stories through loose lines and gentle colours, her work carries a powerful message of social justice. Constantly observing, drawing and photographing the world around her, is a highly personal act that results in public outcome often via animation and illustrations.
