Babette Wagenvoort
Exercises in Drawn Protest

Exploration

Why did you make this work:
Urged on by worries caused by Brexit and the election of Trump I started this project on the day of Women’s March on Washington in 2017. Since then I've searched online for protesting women all over the world and have published over 800 drawings on instagram (@drawn_protest), hoping to somehow empower these women by giving them a lasting visual presence through several publication methods.

How was the illustration used:
All drawings are first published on instagram.com/drawn_protest. People can order them as high quality prints (on demand) in several dark colours. A selection was published in the riso-booklets STRIDE 1 & 2. I made seven drawings into designs for badges now available through Stereohype.com. I’m still working on other possibilities for publication.

How did you make this work:
The original drawings are made in a variety of colours, materials and sizes. They are turned into square black & white images for publication on Instagram and into colours for the A4 prints. STRIDE booklets: I re-worked a selection of drawings, making them into two-colour riso prints. Stereohype buttons: I've re-drawn some of the images, so that the lines would still be visible on the tiny scale.
