Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This was my final project for my MA in Children's book illustration based on the caves at Lascaux and the most incredible prehistoric art that was found there by one young boy in the 1950's. I wanted the project to address our need to make images and tell stories and communicate with each other and with future generations through drawing our thoughts.

How was the illustration used:
This is part of a book about the story of Lascaux and prehistoric art. This work will be published in 2021by Penguin Random House.

How did you make this work:
This is mixed media. Acrylic washes with overlaid pencil layers and a small amount of photoshop.

Kate Winter studied her BA at the Slade school of fine art specialising in Sculpture under RA Phylida Barlow. She started making playful animations and films using mini card board sets and desk lamps in her small east London bedroom and was soon making stop frame animation for music videos and commercials for clients such as Sigur Ros, Zero 7, Orange, Nokia and The Green Party. After having children and deciding it was time to explore more personal themes in her work again, Kate started the MA in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, graduating with distinction in 2019. She won the Ronald Searle award for Creativity in 2019 and her work is being show at the 2020 Illustrators Exhibition at Bologna Children's book fair.
