Why did you make this work:
This series of self-reflected pieces mainly described the struggles that the author had been through, such as anxiety, self- inferiority, self-doubting and depression etc. The author revisiting her heart again and again, trying to use some metaphors to visualize these unspeakable emotions on the paper and hoping this series can resonate with others.

How was the illustration used:
These pieces are selected from the author's picture book called ME INSIDE, which are being made in her first year of MFA program in School of Visual Art.

How did you make this work:
This series of work are mainly drew in digital. First the author will start sketching her ideas on the paper, and then she will scan all the sketches into the computer. Later she will do some color studies or experiments on these sketches, she will colored multiple pieces in one time to keep the color coherent in order to make them into a book.

Biography:
Jiawen Chen is a New York based illustrator who originally come from Guangzhou, China. She is pursuing her illustration MFA degree in School of Visual Art. She always likes to create her work using different techniques, such as digital painting,silkscreen printing and watercolor etc.
