Science & Technology

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The illustration was created to represent the successful long term outcome techniques that may be utilized in complications encountered during an internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm using a pipeline embolism device (PED) implant.

How was the illustration used:
This illustration accompanied a case study in which three PED implants become twisted during pipeline embolisation of a large fusiform internal carotid artery aneurysm. The article describes how the twists were remediated resulting in successful outcomes for the patient. This case report was published with the BMJ (British Medical Journal).

How did you make this work:
The rendering was completed in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop referencing digital subtraction angiography images depicting twisting of the device that occurred during the procedure. Additionally, I was provided with a detailed description of the procedure from the contributing author and neurovascular surgeon, Dr. Alexander Coon.
