Jessica Meyrick
Body Dysmorphia

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Having had personal battles with anorexia and body dysmorphia, I was frustrated by the immediate 'summer body hype' that tends to hit billboards and ads every summertime like clockwork. Body Dysmorphia is a condition that affects 1 in 50 people, causing a person to fixate on perceived physical flaws in a way that is damaging to their mental health and general well-being.

How was the illustration used:
This illustration was a personal project I used on my website and social media platforms, to raise awareness of the importance of mental-wellbeing and mental disorders during Mental Health Awareness Month, 2019.

How did you make this work:
After refining compositional sketches, I made a pencil sketch onto watercolour paper; then layered each colour with Winsor and Newton watercolours. Usually I start with larger areas of block colour, then build up on details. Once the painting was finished, I scanned the image onto Photoshop to adjust the colours and correct any imperfections.
