Why did you make this work:
Cover for a mid-grade novel: When 11-year-old Addie is fostered on a remote Exmoor farm, she is full of hurt, anger and mistrust. But rescuing a wild foal from the moorland snow, she discovers she’s not so alone after all. Brief: Focus on the connection between Addie and the Foal, evoking a feeling with young girls that they ‘want to be Addie’ and have a wonderful connection with an adorable foal.

How was the illustration used:
Book cover and promotional material.

How did you make this work:
Hand-drawn elements and textures in ink were scanned, assembled and colourised in Photoshop, with additional artwork created using digital painting techniques. Special attention was given to the colour palette and landscape details, to create a wintry atmosphere but with warmer colours that feel inviting to the the reader. The shaggy winter coat of the foal was also an important texture to evoke.
