The Empire Sells Out - the story so far (40-page BLAD)

Un-commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I wanted to combine my fine art practice with my other commercial background as an advertising copywriter to produce a light-hearted story with an ongoing narrative. The work is designed to appeal to a wide variety of audiences (from lovers of art to the societally aware, to consumers of social media, current affairs followers and lovers of fiction).

How was the illustration used:
I am using the publication to showcase my latest and ongoing series of small oil on canvas works. I am also using the collection as a portfolio to gain commercial gallery or agent representation and a wider following.

How did you make this work:
Created solely using a palette knife, the major impetus grouping the illustrations is both a continuation and exploration of my method where I draw into and incise wet oil paint, purposely encouraging both spontaneity in the mark making and an informality to the subject matter. Comparable to the voyeuristic observations of CCTV cameras, the viewer becomes a witness to the goings-on.
