Xavier Segers
A Vixen's Tale

Site Specific

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Welsh National Opera commissioned AR agency, Arcade, to create an immersive art installation based on the opera, A Cunning Little Vixen by composer Leoš Janáček. I was selected by both parties to create the visual world of the Vixen. The challenge for me was to create illustrations that would work on both physical and digital levels whilst respecting the legacy of this opera.

How was the illustration used:
The immersive installation was produced for Welsh National Opera to introduce the world of opera to a different audience and to fuse classic work with new technology. My illustrations were at the core of the installation and used throughout the marketing campaign, including augmented reality flyers, snapchat face filters and merchandise. It will be on tour across the UK for the next 2 years.

How did you make this work:
My inspiration came from analysing the story of the opera to distill the characters, mood and overall look and feel. I created my design in illustrator as the printing and construction process required all the illustrations to be vector-based. To keep the illustrations engaging up close as it is afar, I made sure to incorporate lots of intricate patterns in the plants and animals.
