Scientific American

Editorial

Image Type: Single Image

Usage: The piece, Scientific American, was a college project for the editorial illustration class provided by Savannah College of Art and Design. It was a practice to understand how the editorial illustration market work and how to create art piece for the Scientific American magazine.

Process: I started with thumbnails and after I figured out the composition I transformed the one I chose into a more refined version in a bigger scale. I later scanned the piece and brought it into Photoshop to test out colors. Once I know what color palette I’m going for, I then move the Psd file into Adobe Illustrator to finish the piece.

Materials: For thumbnails and sketch I used graphite pencil and sketchbook. For the finished drawing I used Photoshop for color comps and Adobe Illustrator for the final creation.

Formats: The piece was drew in the digital way and was saved in the Adobe Illustrator Ai format and JPEG format.

Brief Requirements: The professor required the class to read through the articles from the Scientific American magazine and to choose the one we like to illustrate with. We need to highly understand what our article is about and how to creatively apply the whole story into a single piece of drawing.

Key Brief Ideas: The article I chose was called ‘Planet Hunters Seek New Ways to Detect Alien Life’, by Alexandra Witze. The article was about how scientists will use NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to detect life forms from other planets by examine their gas to see if there is a ‘trace of life’. For the drawing I decided to draw a scientist ride on the James Webb Space Telescope and examining the gas surrounding him to look for alien.
