Escaping Wars and Waves: The Calais

Image Type: multiple

Usage: Two usages: 1_For group exhibition 'Call me by my Name_Stories from Calais and Beyond' commissioned by the Migration Museum Project 2_To be included in a book project, 'Escaping Wars and Waves', featuring my drawings and texts documenting the circumstances of Syrian refugees I have met in Iraqi Kurdistan, Greece, France, Great Britain and Germany. The book is getting supported by Doctors without Borders, the Arts Council England and the Swiss German publisher Edition Moderne.

Process: In April last year I spent a week (Easter Holidays) in the Calais migrant camp in order to research the circumstances of Syrian refugees waiting for a chance to cross the Channel and to enter the UK. I conducted several interviews with the people I encountered and took hundreds of reference photos. Back in my studio I used the photos as reference for a series of pencil drawings (composed and coloured digitally on double page spreads) depicting the migrants I met. After I transcribed and edited the interviews (recorded on location) I wrote the texts by hand, scanned them and added them to the layout of drawings.

Materials: Digital Camera, audio recorder, pencil (HB), scanner and laptop computer

Formats: Each finished illustration was printed and exhibited on A0 sheets of paper. In the book the illustrations will be reproduced on 450 x 294 mm double page spreads

Brief Requirements: To visit the Calais migrant camp in order to research the circumstances of the Syrian refugees… to find out about the reasons why they are hoping to reach the UK and how they are planning to get there… to use this material to create an engaging series of drawings with texts which convey the refugees' experience to the reader/viewer.
