Lapalux is an electronic artist creating haunting, cinematic sounds from hand-made synths. His new album Amnioverse was inspired by a photograph of American artist James Turrell’s 'Twilight Epiphany Skyspace' installation, located on the Rice University campus in Houston, TX. I was approached to design the record package, aiming to capture the mood of the album using Turrell as a key reference.
How was the illustration used: I designed the whole record package, using the set shots for the cover and inner sleeve. I also designed 28 page booklet, featuring some gorgeous portraits by Dan Medhurst, alongside a series of icons I created to represent each of the album's 10 tracks in a fittingly abstract and graphic style. These icons were also silver foiled onto the sleeve along with the type to add to the futuristic feel.
How did you make this work: For the cover we explored the themes of form, light & shadow to capture the mood of the album. Teaming up with photographer Dan Medhurst I created a miniature paper set using multiple layers to add depth, which we flooded with a warm haze of pink lighting to re-create that Turrell-esque atmosphere. A portrait shot by Dan was then dropped into the set at a scale to add to the vastness of the image.

Owen Gildersleeve is an artist based in London specialising in handcrafted illustration, set design and art direction. His unique style honed over the past 10 years, brings graphic designs to life through carefully cut layers and a playful use of light and shadow. Working with an array of international clients, his practice ranges from intricate paper illustrations and animations, shot in his East London studio, to large-scale sets, window displays and installations.
