Lapalux - Amnioverse

Design Product & Packaging

Why did you make this work:
Lapalux is an electronic artist creating haunting, cinematic sounds from hand-made synths. His new album Amnioverse was inspired by a photograph of American artist James Turrell’s 'Twilight Epiphany Skyspace' installation, located on the Rice University campus in Houston, TX. I was approached to design the record package, aiming to capture the mood of the album using Turrell as a key reference.

How was the illustration used:
I designed the whole record package, using the set shots for the cover and inner sleeve. I also designed 28 page booklet, featuring some gorgeous portraits by Dan Medhurst, alongside a series of icons I created to represent each of the album's 10 tracks in a fittingly abstract and graphic style. These icons were also silver foiled onto the sleeve along with the type to add to the futuristic feel.

How did you make this work:
For the cover we explored the themes of form, light & shadow to capture the mood of the album. Teaming up with photographer Dan Medhurst I created a miniature paper set using multiple layers to add depth, which we flooded with a warm haze of pink lighting to re-create that Turrell-esque atmosphere. A portrait shot by Dan was then dropped into the set at a scale to add to the vastness of the image.
