The Testaments

Editorial

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
These were commissioned to accompany an extract of Margaret Atwood's new book The Testaments (sequel to the Handmaids Tale), that was published in The Guardian. I was given free reign to come up with ideas for how to illustrate the extract by art director Chris Clarke. There was not muchmaterial to draw on because we were only given access to the one chapter that was being published.

How was the illustration used:
The illustrations ran alongside the extract in a stand-alone booklet that The Guardian produced. This included the cover of the booklet, and 4 inside illustrations.

How did you make this work:
After reading the extract I sketched out initital rough tumbnail ideas for the art director to look choose from. I then worked the chosen ideas up in illustrator and photoshop.
