Why did you make this work:
I made this after going back to Vietnam after 15 years. This was done as part of my illustration series called, Plant Ahead. It features women, specifically Southeast Asian, in their moments of solitude and relaxation as well as subtle animation and background music to tie in the atmosphere. The particular setting for this was inspired by an inn I stayed at.

How was the illustration used:
This is a personal project that I'm continuously expanding on. I post this on my art Instagram to share with my online community.

How did you make this work:
I start off by sketching on paper and then placing it in Photoshop to color out the shapes. I then pull it into After Effects to figure out which objects can be done with subtle animation and Adobe Premiere to edit the looping together as well as add in the background music. I usually find my music on SoundCloud to support independent artists. The music is often a lo-fi beat.

Biography:
I am a designer and illustrator based in Oklahoma City, OK. I focus on creating visual art that put women of color at the forefront of contemporary graphic arts. This includes a range of skin tone and facial features that make them unique in contrast to the Eurocentric beauty standards set today. Diving deeper into representation, I take inspirations from my lush and tropical birthplace as well as trying to elevate the facial features of my own Southeast Asian community. I'm seeking to understand how to bridge my own experiences with other communities so, together, we can understand people from their own stories and lived-experiences.
