Jonas Kalmbach
Zodiac

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
The object was to go to Berlin for research and then do a graphic report about Berlin music history. I wanted to make a project about electronic music and found out about a former existing club, called 'Zodiac Free Arts Lab', where an electronic genre, called 'Krautrock' was invented in 1968. I interviewed three people who all had connections to the 'Zodiac'. The result was a zine with 44 pages.

How was the illustration used:
The magazines were sold in a small edition.

How did you make this work:
I used a toothbrush and made stencils to scatter ink on paper. Later I translated this technique into digital (for portraits and posters). The lines are drawn with charcoal. This technique seemed right to me, because I thought it fit the cosmic themes of the music. The magazine was printed in 3 colors with a Risograph, which works similar to silk-screen, each color printed individually.
