I was about to launch with my new agent & needed a strong portfolio of consistent work. I wanted to create a new image which truly demonstrated the style of work I’d make for Picture Books.
This was my style guide:
Bold shapes & colour, for instant appeal.
Playful mark making & content, for joy.
Details, for engaging the viewer to stop & look.
And most importantly I wanted to enjoy creating it
How was the illustration used: online portfolio
How did you make this work: In launching with my agent, I was moving my work into a commercial environment. I was aware that the illustrations I created now would affect the commissions I might receive in the future. It was important to me to create strong foundations, guided by gut-feelings, a sense of fun & happiness.
In this image, I particularly enjoyed painting different textures and shapes onto the bird character.

Biography:
Having grown up in the beautiful city of Oxford, Laurie moved west to study illustration at the University of the West of England. She has worked as a freelancer since graduating in 2010, but only recently arrived at where she feels most at home - illustrating children’s picture books, encouraged by receiving the highly commended Macmillan Prize for her self-written story.
Laurie creates her art digitally using a loose line, lots of texture and a limited but punchy colour palette. The result is a style which is naive and fresh, confident and playful.
Laurie lives with her husband in Bristol, and works out of an inspiring studio space which she shares with a handful of up-beat creatives.
