I gave myself the brief to design a map of Copenhagen (size 50x70cm) to be hand cut on a single sheet of thin paper. The original map was used as a template for a laser cut version sold on my web shop. The map of Copenhagen is part of a series of self initiated hand paper cut maps including the cities of Paris, London, San Francisco, New York and Amsterdam.
How was the illustration used: The original hand paper cut map was used as a template for a laser cut map poster.
How did you make this work: Imagining, drawing and cutting a map is a long process as I take great care into researching each place with details and its inhabitants. Once the entire map is sketched out (in reverse!) on a large sheet of paper, I use a scalpel to cut out the negative spaces around the drawings and text. When I turn the sheet to its coloured front it reveals a lace-like intricate map of the city.
