WIA2021: New Talent Advertising Category Longlist Highlights

Advertising images are everywhere – they convey messages, inform behaviour and sell products and services. Our selection of New Talent longlist entries are by current students and recent graduates – see who the next generation of advertising illustrators are in our curated list!

The World Illustration Awards 2021 Longlist features 500 projects by New Talent and Professional illustrators from all over the world across ten categories. This year, the awards celebrate great illustration! Cecelia’s project is a stop motion music video created for Brazilian musicians JOCA & grãomestre, produced by MangoLab and Redley, for Redley Records. The song New Millennium talks about making art in this new era. This work was made when the artists were quarantine and an animated video clip was created as a result.

Cecilia Abeid is a Brazilian artist from Rio de Janeiro, currently based in New York.

This portfolio work is based on a recent experience of seeing imperfect gingerbread men on sale at the supermarket. This animation asks, what if the cookies had feelings like people do?

Jiaqi Shao is currently an MFA illustration student at Edinburgh College of Art.

Yizhou He’s project depicts an imaginary future Wuhan City populated by a super species.

Yizhou is currently studying and working in Italy, getting his MFA in Graphic Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he also received his Bachelors in Decoration Design.

Jodie’s illustrations show what’s its like to live with a dissociative disorder which is incredibly difficult to describe. The illustrations are now being used as part of a campaign to promote ‘Unreal’, which is a UK based charity raising awareness and providing support for those suffering with the condition.

Jodie Howard is currently based near Cambridge, after recently graduating from Cambridge School of Art. She enjoys drawing and design, occasionally with elements of animation.

Abanti D Chowdhury is a New York-based illustrator, studying for her MFA in the Illustration as Visual Essay program at the School of Visual Arts. 

This project was created for her portfolio, encouraging people to follow social distancing protocols.

Amy Leonard is an Illustrator based in England. She graduated from Arts University Bournemouth in 2020, and has since been working as a freelance illustrator.

This poster was commissioned by Little White Lies and Modern Films to create as an alternative design to advertise the online release of the film “Falling” starring Lance Henriksen and directed by Viggo Mortensen.

This illustration was made for different social media platforms for La Sabiduría del Cuerpo (The Wisdom of the Body) to advertise a course about body-positivity, and health at all sizes. 

Adelitas is a fashion and textile designer from Costa Rica. After graduating in Buenos Aires, Argentina she traveled through South America and moved to Bogotá, Colombia.

Marie Doerfler’s series of illustrations were created for furniture designs by Hamburg-based company [more]. The illustrations were created for their 2021 catalogue, showing their products in a playful and imaginative way. 

Marie is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from Hamburg, Germany. She studied BA communication design at the UAS in Augsburg, graphic design at the Falmouth University and currently MA illustration at the HAW Hamburg. 

This poster was created for Chinese tea brand “NAYUKI”. The poster depicts the city of Hangzhou with its recognisable characteristics, such as a Pagoda and the West Lake.

Di Wang comes from Hangzhou, China. She is currently studying illustration MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). 

This portfolio work by Lauren Fletcher was created for a cosmetics brand celebrating diversity whilst highlighting the importance of being proud of who you are. 

Lauren Fletcher is currently studying Illustration at Arts University Bournemouth, UK.
